1Dyatlov Pass

Perhaps the scariest mystery surrounding mountains is one that happened in 1959 in the Urals in Siberia. Namely, nine hikers went to explore the area of Kholat Syakhl mountain, nicknamed ‘Dead Mountain.’ The group of hikers went missing and after weeks of searching, a rescue unit discovered something horrifying.

All nine hikers were dead, but the circumstances of their deaths were incredibly strange. Namely, the rescue unit found their camp, and while their equipment was intact, their tents were cut open. The bodies of the young hikers were found frozen one mile away from the camp, while the other bodies were closer to the tents.

There were many footprints surrounding the camp. Some of the hikers looked as if they were returning to their tents in a rush. The remaining bodies were found in a hole in the snow that they dug out themselves. An extremely high radiation level was discovered on their clothes and one hiker was even found with her eyes and tongue removed.

The area was named Dyatlov Pass after the leader of the group, Igor Dyatlov. Many theories exist about this incident, among the most popular ones claim that the hikers were murdered because they discovered a secret testing facility, and others say that aliens were involved. This case was never solved.
